We have extremely sad news to pass along today as we have learned that Teri Garr has passed away at the age of 79.
The actress died Tuesday of multiple sclerosis “surrounded by family and friends,” said publicist Heidi Schaeffer. Garr battled other health problems in recent years and underwent an operation in January 2007 to repair an aneurysm, according to a report on WRBL.
Garr was loved by horror fans for her appearances in Mel Brooks’s horror comedy Young Frankenstein (1974), and Steven Spielberg’s science fiction film Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Garr gained prominence for her roles in Francis Ford Coppola’s thriller The Conversation (1974) and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Sydney Pollack comedy Tootsie (1982). She reunited with Coppola in a role in his musical One from the Heart (1982), starred opposite Michael Keaton in the family film Mr. Mom (1983), and acted in Martin Scorsese’s black comedy After Hours (1985).
Garr also appeared in Star Trek, The Ken Berry WOW Show, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, MASH, The Bob Newhart Show, The Odd Couple, Maude, Barnaby Jones, Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers, Let it Ride and Friends.
The staff of Horror News Network send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Garr.
